ACTION

“Taking ACTION to Reduce Pain”, or ACTION, as it’s more commonly known, is a randomized clinical trial looking at a non-pharmacological walking intervention for Veterans with chronic hip, back or knee pain. 50% of the people enrolled will receive a telephone coaching program that addresses some of the barriers to walking and works on developing strategies to overcome them. The telephone coaching program has elements of motivational interviewing, action planning (making a structured plan) and the use of cognitive behavioral techniques.

ACTION is a 4 year trial that began in July 2015. It is actively recruiting from the Atlanta VA Medical Center, although all study staff and data is housed at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. During September and October 2015, 4 focus groups were conducted at the Atlanta VA to better tailor the materials being used to the specific population.
