Long COVID Practice Based Research Network

Long COVID has been referred to as the “greatest mass disabling event in history,” and the Veterans Health Administration has supported multiple converging efforts to address access to and delivery of Long COVID care. There is an urgent need to integrate evidence-based practice with implementation of standardized care pathways for Veteran-centered Long COVID care. To address this need, we have proposed a Long COVID Practice Based Research Network (PBRN) that will identify and support data-drive, practice-based, and stakeholder-informed research. The proposed project will also work to convene and connect partners to centralize Long COVID clinical, research, and operational activities.

This will be a multi-site effort including the Minneapolis VA Health Care System (Minneapolis, MN), the James J. Peters VA Medical Center (Bronx, NY), and the Puget Sound VA Health Care System (Seattle, WA). The Long COVID PBRN will be further organized into five cores with specific goals and activities assigned to each:
1) Administrative Core
a) Formalize organizational structures to identify processes for decision making.
b) Convene stakeholders in Advisory Boards to provide guidance on emerging issues in Long COVID and evaluate          Long COVID PBRN efforts.
c) Develop, implement, and maintain a pilot submission and evaluate process for future projects through the Long          COVID PBRN.
2) Partner Engagement & Needs Assessment Core
a) Conduct Veteran Engagement Panels to ensure Veterans’ perspectives are involved in setting research priorities.
b) Create a national network of Long COVID clinics, clinicians, and programs.
c) Conduct a modified Delphi consensus to identify research priorities for future pilot projects.
3) Patient Identification & Analysis Core
a) Build and maintain a Long COVID registry for clinician, research, and operations level use.
b) Develop analytic tools of the registry to support patient recruitment in future pilot projects.
4) Clinical Coordination & Implementation Core
a) Create a toolkit of best practices for identifying and recruiting Veterans for future pilot projects.
b) Support and assist Long COVID clinics with data collection to document common data elements, practice                  patterns, and outcomes.
5) Dissemination Core.
a) Create a toolkit of multimodal dissemination strategies to disseminate Long COVID PBRN findings across the Long COVID ecosystem.
b) Support and assist Long COVID PBRN pilot projects with dissemination plans.

Long COVID PBRN findings and efforts will be developed, interpreted, and disseminated through multiple feedback loops among and between targeted partners in the VA Long COVID ecosystem.
